Sir Humphrey Davy, Gay-Lussac and Thenard discovered boron in 1808, despite the foreknowledge of many boron compounds before their discovery. This element is not naturally free in nature, but occurs as orthoboric acid in certain volcano springs. Some research has linked boron compounds with the treatment of arthritis.
